Confession: I have a much closer relationship with dessert than I should. I usually don’t discriminate against any dessert (except for flan), but I do typically have strong opinions about what particular dessert to have depending on the event. Or my mood that day. So often, just any old dessert will not do. And for the 4th of July, I love a good berry trifle. But if you’re anywhere other than someone’s home, it’s not exactly practical to drag a huge and beautiful trifle bowl around. Fortunately, there are these wonderful little things call mason jars which turn that big bowl into mini, portable trifles. You can still get your fix and wow your friends and family with adorable dessert at your Independence Day celebration, whether you’re at the beach, the park, the lake, or anywhere else.
The wonder of this is that it’s so very easy but looks so very fancy. Simply layer your ingredients as you usually would, screw on a lid and tie on spoon with a little bit of twine. Not only do you have your yummy dessert, but it’ll be just as visually appealing as it’s the full-sized cousin.
And if berry trifles aren’t your thing, there’s no need to fret. A simple “mason jar dessert” search on Pinterest will yield plentiful results with just about any variation of dessert you could ask for. Everything from chocolate cake, to apple pie, to peach crisp, to tiramisu, to salted caramel cheesecake (that’ll be my next experiment)–you can put just about any dessert there is in a mason jar to enjoy on the go. It’s a traveling dessert-lovers dream-come-true.
So don’t let the fact that you’re off watching the fireworks deter you from your cute and yummy 4th of July dessert. Pull out your mason jar–or any jar, for that matter–and take it with you. Just don’t forget your spoon.
