It’s been way too long, but we’re finally ready to feature another SoCal mompreneur and small business owner! This week we’d love to introduce you to our good friend, Michelle Wade, the adorable redheaded mama owner of Lucy Bug Boutique. Michelle creates and sells teething necklaces and accessories made from silicone and wood beads. The necklaces, which are are fashionable, practical, and completely safe, are perfect for Mommy to wear and babies to chew! And for the next week, our readers will receive 15% off of any order from her shop (details at the bottom)!
We’ve known Michelle for years and have always loved her fun, friendly, and bubbly personality. She’s the type of person who makes the new person in the room feel welcome, and you just can’t help but want to be friends with her.
We always try to support small business (especially when they’re owned by friends), so when we found out she was making these adorable necklaces, we, of course, rushed right out and bought some. We have loved wearing them and our kiddos have loved chewing on them. I have one of the keychains (which easily separates from the keys), and my toddler (who’s getting her dreaded 2 year molars) chews on the beads, while my 4 year old plays with my keys. I can’t tell you how many times it’s allowed me to finish my grocery shopping…or if I’m to be completely honest, my browsing through Target…with a contented child.
There are two things we really love about Michelle’s products. First, they’re completely safe. The silicone beads are 100% silicone and are non-toxic, lead free, BPA free, mercury free and nonporous (so they don’t harbor all those nasty germs). The wood beads are made from teething safe wood treated with organic beeswax and coconut oil to prevent cracking. They can easily be cleaned with a baby wipe, with warm, soapy water, or by simply tossing them in the top rack of of your dishwasher.
Secondly, Michelle has done a wonderful job of designing these beautiful and unique items (often with the help her daughter…more on that below). The variety of shapes, textures and colors she uses creates on trend pieces that the contemporary mom would want to wear. She often does custom work, as well as Mommy & Me necklaces. Also, due to Michelle and her children’s deep love for all things Disney, she’s designed a line of “Fairy Tale Inspired” necklaces that simply delight the little humans chewing on them. And let’s be honest, us moms get pretty excited about them too. I mean, what Little Mermaid fanatic wouldn’t want a teal and purple necklace strung on a red cord?
Below, Michelle gives a little peek into her world and how she started her business:
I’m a wife to my handsome hubby and a Mommy to two littles. I love to start all kinds of crafts but rarely finish them! Instead I find myself reenacting Disney movies with my three and a half year old and chasing after my dare devil one and a half year old, or having dance parties with both of them and loving it! I’ll finish my pile of crafts when they’re in college and I’m sad and lonely. Just kidding, I’ll probably cry and make my husband crazy watching Rapunzel 100 times a week and call my kids every five minutes!
While in these beginning stages of Motherhood I’ve have had my share of “Im gonna tear my hair out” teething moments! And I’ve also stopped wearing jewelry during my sons “hold me all day every day or I’ll scream” phase. I was afraid my chunky necklaces would scratch his little face, and equally afraid he’d get a handful of fake shiny jewels in his surprisingly firm little grasp and eventually his mouth! I had seen some teething friendly scarves and necklaces, but nothing I actually liked or could see myself wearing with what I had in my closet. So I decided to do some investigating and make my own. I should mention that I have a slightly addictive personality and ended up with way more necklaces than one mom—even of a colicky teething baby—needs. Thankfully my friends in the nursing room at church noticed my little guy munching on the beads while we chatted, and started to ask me to make them some! One thing led to another and Lucy Bug Boutique was born.
The shop is actually named after My daughter Lucy, who we call Lucy Bug, because she’s been “helping” mommy make necklaces since the beginning. Every one I made she wanted one just like it! I loved that we could do this together during the baby’s nap and that she could express her creativity too. She loves to string beads herself, and she’s made lots of her own necklaces, which is so fun! I also loved that we could make something that made us both feel pretty and dressed up, as well as help alleviate some of baby brothers teething frenzy. Now days, I do most of my creating while she’s having quiet time in her room, so she doesn’t steal all my beads!
I love playing with colors and styles and most of my pieces are unique. I’m always up for recreating one I’ve already sold or coming up with a custom piece to fit a customers exact style. Check out Instagram for pictures of my recent pieces and my Etsy shop to see what I have available now.
