My ideal day would begin with brunch and include some type of creative project with girlfriends, and recently I was able to host just such a day. A group of girlfriends got together and shared our favorite fall brunch dishes and got a personal lesson in candlemaking from the maker of my favorite candles, Michelle from All Good Things Candles.
Michelle brought her amazing line of fall scents, and gave us a breakdown of the whole candle-making process. We were even able to make our own candle to take home!
It’s finally cooling off and the leaves are changing here in sunny SoCal, so this gathering was a celebration of all things Fall. Here’s a list of the decorations we used to pull off this look.
- White pumpkins
- Flowers in fall colors from Trader Joe’s
- Mini flag banner from Pom Paperie
- “Thankful” sign made by us with rose gold tassels from Pink Poppy Party Shoppe
- “Hello Fall” napkins and gold plates from Target
I displayed the food on my chalk-painted vintage dresser, which was a fun change from a table. We love to shop around our own homes to find new ways to decorate for events; something unexpected like a dresser can be a great option for displaying your food or decor.
White pumpkins were the star of the show, along with some quick floral arrangements in teal mason jars and vintage vases. Making a “vase” out of a pumpkin is simpler than it looks– it took me about 10 minutes to quickly carve it out and place some mums, carnations, and eucalyptus inside. It holds water just like a regular vase and the water keeps the pumpkin fresh; my pumpkin was just like new even when all of the flowers had wilted.
The sweet packaging of Michelle’s candles made them very decorative on their own. We love the way they are gently tinted in soft shades that matched the Fall decor we had throughout the party.
The brunch was pot-luck style, so there wasn’t really a specific menu. Since my friends enjoy cooking as much as I do, we had many yummy options to choose from.
- Quiches and breakfast casseroles
- Fresh fruit
- Pumpkin oatmeal (healthy and crock-pot friendly, see recipe here)
- Blueberry muffins
- Pumpkin treats from Trader Joe’s (like a petite four)
- Pumpkin Panettone bread from Trader Joe’s
- Apple cider punch
- Pumpkin spiced coffee
The apple cider punch is a super simple Trader Joe’s hack. I mixed their spiced apple cider with sparkling water; ginger ale is also a great mix-in for a little extra kick.
It was so fun to see the whole process of making candles from scratch. Michelle demonstrated how precisely the ingredients must be measured and added to ensure the texture of the wax is right and the candle burns properly.
She melted the wax on an electric burner, and once a certain temperature was reached she added the scents. We watched her make two of my favorites, Fairytale Pumpkin (the perfect sweet pumpkin smell) and Cinnamon Vanilla (which I love to burn all year long).
We got to see a close up of the wax once the color was added. Again, the process was very precise with the amount and when and how it could be mixed. At the end, we each poured the finished melted wax into the jar that we had prepared with the wick.
Even though I consider myself a very crafty/DIY type gal, watching Michelle through each step of the process confirmed that I’m content to support her candle making business rather than make my own candles. I would find it difficult to keep track of all of the precise measurements and time, especially when I can hardly follow a dinner recipe with my little munchkins wrapped around my legs! Luckily we were able to smell all of Michelle’s amazing candles, and she even brought a few extra that we could buy.
This Antique Jade is one of my favorites (very fresh and clean with green tea, currant and fig), though it’s very difficult to choose. Cinnamon Vanilla, like I said before, is a warm and inviting scent good for all year long, and it makes your house smell like cinnamon rolls just came out of the oven.
For local followers, you definitely don’t want to miss The Polkadot Roadshow, a local craft and maker boutique where you can scoop up some of these amazing candles as Christmas gifts. Michelle will have a booth there, along with many other incredible creatives who we’ve gotten to know.
And guess what, we’re hosting a giveaway for Polka Dot Roadshow tickets on our Instagram account this week! You could win a pair of tickets to get in free and have an amazing day of shopping from local ladies who pour their whole heart into their businesses. We will be there, and we’d love to meet you too!
