We met with our sweet and talented photographer friend Suzy VanDyke a few months ago over coffee, and something magical happened. We were talking about all things life and business when inspiration struck. We wanted to launch Smash Cake with an awesome event, and Suzy was in need of a baby shower with baby number two arriving in a few months. When Suzy suggested a bohemian baby shower on the beach, all of our eyes lit up and the wheels started turning. She showed us a photo of a cozy group of girls reclining on pillows and dining under a giant tree with the sun setting over the ocean and we couldn’t even contain our excitement to start planning.
We had so much fun ditching our kids for the day and going location scouting for this event. Fortunately, we found Carpenteria State Beach rather quickly. With it’s giant, gnarled trees cozied up against the shore and weathered wooden picnic tables, it was the perfect spot for our event. Not to mention the ample parking and close proximity to bathrooms (which is always nice for an expectant mama).
Suzy loves to eat as healthy as possible, which we fully appreciate (we should mention here that we love to eat healthy too, but we equally love cake). Our menu was organic and primarily gluten-free and vegetarian, but still completely amazing. We tried to keep it simple so it would withstand the elements (there’s no heating things up at the beach), but still really yummy and filling for our guests. We served a variety of gourmet cheeses with loaves of crusty artisan bread, honeycomb, grass-fed butter, preserves and fruit. We also served a lentil salad and a spinach pesto salad, along with some Aussie Bites, spiced nuts and olives. We finished off our meal with a delicious flourless chocolate cake and a gluten-free raspberry tart with raspberry creme fraiche. For drinks we served refreshing sparkling Pellegrino and home-brewed kombucha.
A number of eclectic elements were necessary to give this event a bohemian feel. We scoured our homes (and our friends’ and hippy parents’ homes) to find cultural and artistic objects that weren’t too “matchy” but coordinated well together, like succulents, geodes, brass vessels, and lanterns. Large rugs, pillows, and cozy blankets allowed guests to recline while Suzy opened her gifts.
We were also honored to work with some extremely talented vendors on this shower. Brianna from Thread and Sow amazed everyone with her floral design and tablescape. Melanie Ham crocheted an absolutely stunning macrame inspired table runner (tutorial available here), which everyone was swooning over. Christal from iSewpose created custom yarn hoops that were exactly what we were looking for–giving a nod to a navajo style dreamcatcher but with their own unique twist. And Cari from Cari’s Canvas hand painted the darling sign that is now hanging in Suzy’s nursery.
One of our favorite details from the evening was dining on fine vintage china, goblets, and flatware from Dish Wish. These pieces were simply stunning, and a huge step up from the typical paper goods that we normally associate with beach gatherings.
We wanted to send everyone home with a little token of our appreciation for coming to celebrate Suzy and her baby boy. After seeing a really cool (and unfortunately out of our price range) bracelet, Angie created her own version which makes for a simple and adorable DIY favor (post coming soon).
If we were to pick a word to describe this night, it would be magical. Just completely magical. As seen from the photos, a mist rolled in from the ocean to create the perfect fall vibe (something that doesn’t go unnoticed in sunny SoCal). We enjoyed an intimate meal, warm conversation, and praying together for Suzy and her transition to mama of two.
Isn’t this mama-to-be stunning?
