We’re totally in love with the cactus theme right now. There are so many cute cactus party ideas out there and so many directions you can go with it. I’ve been itching to do a cactus party for a while and fortunately, my good friend, Erykah from Rad Little Lipstick, has similar feelings regarding these prickly portents and asked me to come up with an adorable cactus themed 1st birthday for her equally adorable baby boy, Saylor.
When Erykah first approached me about this party, she gave me some general guidelines for what she wanted, and then let me run with it. Coming up with a design for an event is always so much easier when you know the person you’re designing for; and as Erykah and I have been friends for years, I was excited to be able to create something she would love. If you follow her on social media, you know that she’s a “rad” and fun personality with her own unique style (I mean, she has purple hair right now). I knew that a contemporary feel would fit her well, so I came up with a design that was on-trend, clean and simple, and contained just a hint of tribal and geometric elements. And as this party was for a baby boy, I wanted to steer clear of the more feminine aspects you’d typically find at a cactus party (particularly those dreamy pink flowers). For colors, we stuck with varying shades of mint green (Erykah’s favorite) and a couple touches of pastel blue and pale yellow, contrasted against black.
For our dessert table backdrop, I created a variety of black garlands, including our birthday boy’s name in a funky font, creating a striking contrast against the pastels of the dessert. A green cactus banner added an extra layer of dimension to all the black.
The addition of a few simple decorative pieces were the perfect accessories to the table. One of my favorites was a cactus trio print from Honey I Love You–when I saw the simplicity of her potted cacti drawing at the Polka Dot Road Show a couple weeks before, I knew I needed to have it for this party. And I loved the contemporary ceramic cactus and cactus marquee light from our Couples Cocktails & Cooking Class so much that I decided to use them again. Finally we added a giant inflatable cactus (which also doubled as a Photo Booth prop) and a llama lawn ornament (because llamas are amazing and we love them).
Due to the amazing talents of Nickel’s Cake Creations and Nat’s Sweets, this dessert tables is one of my all time favorites. To start with, the smash cake was absolutely darling! We decided to go with a white on white herringbone design to keep with the modern theme and mimic the backdrop banners, accented with a fondant prickly pear cactus on the side and large, gold number one candle on top. There were the cactus cupcakes topped with a pale yellow flower. And then the cutest dessert of all time and the marriage of two of my all-time favorite things: cactus macarons! I was ecstatic when I saw what Nicole had some up with. Seriously. So cute. And finally, Nat’s almost too cute to eat cookies. She had the llama cookies cutters custom made for this party (so now you can order them for your next llama party!) and was able to perfectly execute my cookie vision.
We designed the photo booth to be an extension of and match the dessert table backdrop. We picked the phrase “Free Hugs” because even prickly cacti need a little love, and a photo booth is the perfect place to hug your friends and get your picture taken taken. A giant inflatable cactus that doubled as dessert table decor was the perfect hugging prop.
Each of our treasured guests were able to “prick” one of Nat’s Sweets adorable cookies to take home with them. I designed favor tags with cute little watercolor cacti and words of gratitude for helping to make Saylor’s 1st birthday extra special.
Our Birthday Boy
Being an adorable one year old can be exhausting. And try as he might, sweet little Saylor just couldn’t stay awake for his whole party. Fortunately, a little icing rubbed on his lips did the trick and he was able to happily (and groggily) enjoy his birthday song and cake. What a fun party this was, and what an honor to be part, not just of his 1st birthday, but of his precious life. Happy birthday, Saylor!
