My youngest recently turned one. She is the sweetest, happiest, smilingest (is that a word?) baby I know, and I wanted to give her a party that was just as sweet and adorable as she is. It took me a while to finally settle on unicorns (usually I decide way in advance), but it quickly turned into one of my favorite themes. My vision was to keep things simple and subtle–I wanted to stay away from lots of bright rainbowy colors. So I stayed with pink, gold and mint, along with hints of other colors. I DIY’d literally everything for this party (mostly with the help of my newly purchase Silhouette Cameo—oh man, best purchase ever!)…from the cupcake toppers, to the paper mâché unicorn head, to the myriad of felt flowers, to the sparkly playdough favors. There was felt and glitter all over the house for weeks. But I’m ok with that because I love glitter.
Our dessert bar was complete with cake, cupcakes, Golden Oreo Balls, cotton candy, Unicorn horn snack mix, marshmallow swirls and legit cotton candy from the giant cotton candy machine we rented. The entire place smelled of sweet, spun sugar as puffs of it floated through the air. It was a sugar-lovers dream come true.
The favor was handmade glittery sparkly play dough. Guests could pick their two favorite colors, along with a scoop full of candy, to take home with them. I had so much fun making the play dough! I actually got a little out of hand and made a TON. Fortunately it was right before Valentine’s Day and we were able to use the extra as gifts for our eldest’s classmates (and still have enough to keep plenty for ourselves!)
And what do you do when you have 30 children, ages 5 and under, coming to your house? You rent a bounce house. I never thought I’d be a bounce house person, but this was some of the best money I ever spent! Our little guest were happily occupied the entire time, and then went home and took amazing naps for their Mommies and Daddies. And naps make everyone happy.Birthday Girl
And just like that I exited the infant stage of mommyhood. It was bittersweet and not without a few tears. But I’m excited to see how this little one grows and changes over the next year. Happy birthday, to my sweet baby girl!
